The 3rd annual Katipunan Golf Tournament held at the Oakmont golf club on July 31 proved to be another resounding success as a banner field of 74 players competed in the 18-hole event for the benefit of slain Filipino journalists.
Conrado Bautista led the winners as he scored a net 70.5 to clinch the Class A championship in the men’s division. His nines of 43-49 gave him a handicap of 21.5 under the Callaway scoring format. Runnerup was Dario Colina with a net 71, while Ramiro Casalda submitted a net 71.5 for third place.
Albert Manalo came in with nine 40-46 and a net 75 to win the Class B title. Melchor Ayban and Neil Ferraren came in second and third, respectively, with identical net 75.5.
Class C champion was Julius Bregoli, who beat Joe Copeland and Joe Loreto for the first-place trophy on countback after they each scored identical net 78. Copeland settled for second, and Loreto finished third.
Joanne Toledo topped the ladies’ division with a net 76 on nines 48-46. Kathy Burke finished second, and Katipunan’s Rose Baltazar came in third with a net 79.
The top three finishers in the seniors division were Dr. Ed Reyes with a net 71, Dr.Ray Magno with a net 74.5, and Dr. Teody Paglinauan with a net 75.
Katipunan President Belle Owens and treasurer Linda Jacobo awarded the trophies to the winners.
The tournament was held for the benefit of the Press Freedom Fund for Slain Filipino Journalists under the auspices of the Manila-based National Press Club of the Philippines. The Fund provides legal assistance to families in their quest for justice, as well as educational benefits for deserving children of victims.
